Research in Jon’s Group is focused advancing the frontiers of synthetic organic chemistry, training the next generation of excellent molecular architects, and applying those skills and interests towards practical applications in arenas such as materials (polymers), drug discovery, total synthesis etc. where design of creative and practical routes of target structures is critical for success. Students in Jon’s group will upon graduation become expert synthetic organic chemistry, with focused training in the following areas: (1) Design and develop NEW organic reactions, which includes decoding reaction mechanism, determine scope and apply towards target structures and establishment of novel collections for screening, (2) Design and execute creative and efficient synthetic blueprint towards natural products, drug architectures and other targets of interest, (3) Design and synthesize novel monomers for polymer and atomically precise nanostructures for practical optical and quantum applications as well as participating in the (4) design of novel organic chemistry centered educational products like the successful Top 200 drug posters, Disease-Structure Focused drug Posters and the app/website Chemistry By Design the group has produced in the past.
